William H. H. Whiting's U.S. Patent 632,665, issued in 1899, documents an electric fire engine. The sheet is headed "Patented Sept. 5, 1899", with the application filed Jan. 14, 1899, and is marked "3 Sheets". The engine is drawn as a wheeled frame carrying electric motors, gearing and a pump with its pipes.
The sheet carries Fig. 1, a large side view turned sideways on the page. Two spoked wheels with their hubs and motor housings sit at the top and bottom, with a large drum-shaped motor at the lower left. Between them are meshing gear wheels, a pump with pipe runs and two hand-wheel valves, and a spring-loaded control rod at the left. Letters and numerals label the parts, and the witnesses and the inventor sign at the foot.
