Thomas A. Edison's U.S. Patent 203,016, issued in 1878, documents a speaking telephone. The sheet is headed "Speaking-Telephone" and "Patented April 30, 1878", and carries the line "Case No. 151.". The drawing is a circuit diagram of two matching stations joined by a line wire.
The page is a single mirror-image diagram, with "Station 1." at the left and "Station 2." at the right. Each station has a transmitter marked A, a coil marked E, a switch lever marked C, an electromagnet and small round bell marked H, a relay marked F and a plate marked B, with the circuit wires numbered 20 to 26 and an earth connection at the foot. The witnesses sign at left, and Edison's signature, made through his attorney, at right.
