This meticulous nautical chart captures Portsmouth Harbor at the height of America's maritime golden age, when New Hampshire's only seaport bustled with merchant vessels, naval ships, and fishing fleets. Created during the early 1900s, this survey map reveals the intricate waterways, depth soundings, and coastal features that guided countless vessels safely through the Piscataqua River's challenging currents.

Portsmouth served as a crucial naval shipyard and commercial hub, its protected harbor sheltering everything from grand schooners to working lobster boats. The chart's precise detail reflects the era's commitment to safe navigation—each shoal, channel marker, and depth measurement carefully recorded by maritime surveyors. These vintage nautical charts weren't just tools; they were lifelines for the captains who depended on their accuracy.
