Patrick J. Ryan's U.S. Patent 638,147, issued in 1899, documents a stockless anchor. The sheet is headed P. J. Ryan, Stockless Anchor, patented November 28, 1899, with the application filed February 3, 1899, and is marked sheet 1 of 2. The drawing shows an anchor whose flukes pivot on the shank.
Two figures are drawn. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the whole anchor: a long shank with an eye at the top and two broad flukes with open centres, marked 1, set on a jaw at the lower end. Fig. 2 shows the head with one fluke removed, together with two loose parts, numbered 5 to 17, that lock the pivot. Witnesses, the inventor and the attorneys have signed.
