James H. Bryans's U.S. Patent 627,901, issued in 1899, documents an alarm clock. The sheet is headed "Patented June 27, 1899", with the application filed Aug. 24, 1897, and the note "(No Model.)". The drawings concentrate on the movement, with toothed wheels, levers and a long rod that works the alarm.
Five figures are drawn. Fig. 1 is a large view of the movement, with a mainspring barrel and toothed wheels at the base, and a thin upright rod rising to a small arm and disc at the top. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the plates and gear train. Fig. 3 is a round disc with two holes, Fig. 4 a star-shaped wheel, and Fig. 5 a pair of levers. Numerals up to 30 label the parts. The witnesses and the inventor sign at the foot.
