This exquisitely detailed nautical chart captures one of America's most storied stretches of coastline, from Maine's Cape Elizabeth down to the iconic hook of Cape Cod. Created in the early 20th century, this working maritime map guided countless vessels through waters that had challenged navigators since the Mayflower first approached these shores in 1620.
The chart's meticulous soundings, lighthouse positions, and hazard markings tell the story of a coast both beautiful and treacherous. During this era, steamships and fishing fleets relied on such precise cartography to navigate the shoals of Cape Cod Bay and the rocky approaches to Portland Head Light. Every depth marking and coastal feature represents years of careful surveying by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey.
